You can find the User's Guide under the Reading History tab on Heinemann. This resource has great supports for this unit and the accompanying writing unit.
Mentor Topic: Native Americans
Resources to Support Planning and Student Research with an Adapted Mentor Topic
Our recommended resource for teaching this unit is the spiral-bound text, Reading History: The American Revolution, Book 3 of Units of Study for the Teaching of Reading. You will just adapt the mentor topic content to focus on the Native American history within the regions of the United States.
To support your students in their research--reading and viewing of expository texts, images, artifacts, and videos--we wanted to provide you with some resources for this unit. Below you will find a document that serves as a “starter list” of resources that specifically address the topic of Native Americans, including suggestions for resources you may need for a particular session. You will also find the Heinemann website useful for anchor charts, student examples (even though the topic will be different), learning progressions, and the type of content resource needed for a particular lesson.
We will continue to add resources to this document when possible. We encourage teachers to forward any materials you think may be good additions to this list. Given that the Native American focus for this unit is a Plymouth Public Schools' adaptation, and an effort to integrate Social Studies and ELA content, we are working closely with Kathy Babini and Lisa White to vet and share resources. With your input, this unit will truly be a collaborative effort.
