Anchor Lessons to Support the Teaching of This Mini-Unit
Below you will find some anchor lessons for this unit.  These lessons can be used for the minilesson portion of the reading workshop.  After teaching all the components of the lessons, you would then send the children off to independent reading, inviting them to try the strategy in their own reading response.  During the end-of-workshop share, students can share any written responses they added to their Reader's Notebook.

These lessons come from Readers Writing:  Lessons for Responding to Narrative and Informational Text by Elizabeth Hale.   We selected lessons that could support other comprehension strategy lessons (such as those from the Comprehension Toolkit) that you may have taught during your Launching unit or general comprehension lessons that students may have experienced in grade 3.  The narrative lessons use passages from The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane since third grade students are familiar with that text from grade 3.  The nonfiction lessons use samples from the text, The Honey Makers by Gail Gibbons.  You can choose to use different texts for any of these lessons.  Use these lessons to design your own lessons that would be appropriate for your students.
